A Prayer for Obedience (2 of 5)
Series: The Model Prayer
J. Gerald Harris
Matthew 6:9-13
Let us look once again at this segment of the model prayer: ''Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done in Earth as it is in Heaven.'' God calls us to follow Him. God calls us to obedience. And this model prayer is a prayer for obedience. It talks about a kingdom and a kingdom presupposes the idea of a king. A king is sovereign, and a king has subjects who are called to obey his word, his way and his will.
John MacArthur Jr. has a book entitled ''Found: God's Will.'' And in the book he says that there are those who are actually afraid of the will of God. He says, ''I will never forget the athlete who came up to me at Hume Lake Camp and said, ''I'm not sure I want to give my life to Jesus Christ because I am afraid of what he will make me do.''
This athlete had the idea that God wants to take robust athletes, brake both their legs and make them play the flute. This implies that God is a kind of cosmic ''kill-joy'' stomping on everybody's fun and raining on parades. People with this view actually fear the will of God as a severe way of life which will demand a sacrifice of their most treasured ability or possession.
However, in my experience I have found quite the contrary to be true. I never will forget an experience I had in high school. I was seeking to determine God's will for my life. I was in my senior year in high school, I was trying to make a decision about which college to attend, and I remember reading a verse of scripture which has been special to me ever since. It's in Micah, Chapter 7, verse 8. This is what it says, ''When I fall I shall arise; when I sit in the darkness, the Lord shall be a light unto me.''
At the time I did not remember ever having read that verse before. I had never heard a preacher or teacher quote or refer to that verse in a message. I read it and reread it. I closed my Bible and let its great truth soak into my very soul. It was t ...
