GOD'S PICTURE OF A FAITHFUL MINISTRY
Jesse M. Hendley
II Timothy 4:1-8
There is in the Bible a picture of God's man, what God
says a preacher ought to be. It is found through the
lips of the Apostle Paul in II Timothy, chapter 4. I
would like to read this to you, and then we will go
into it in detail. Paul said:
"I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus
Christ, Who shall judge the living and the dead by
His appearing and His kingdom, PREACH THE WORD. BE
INSTANT IN SEASON AND OUT OF SEASON. REPROVE,
REBUKE, EXHORT, WITH ALL LONGSUFFERING AND TEACH-
ING. For the time will come when they will not
endure sound doctrine (teaching), but after their
own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers
having itching ears, and they shall turn away their
ears from the truth and shall be turned unto
fables. But WATCH THOU IN ALL THINGS. ENDURE
AFFLICTIONS. DO THE WORK OF AN EVANGELIST. MAKE
FULL PROOF OF THY MINISTRY."
Then this great old man said, "For I am now ready
to be offered (poured out as a drink offering) and
the time of my departure is at hand." Paul is at
the end of his ministry. "I have fought a good
fight. I have finished my course. I HAVE KEPT THE
FAITH. Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown
of righteousness which the Lord, the Righteous
Judge, shall give to me at that day, and not to me
only but unto all them also that love His
appearing."
So we have the young man beginning his ministry and
the old man ending his ministry. We have here the
words, DIVINELY INSPIRED, of an old preacher who is
saying to a young preacher, "This is a successful
preacher's life." It is God's picture of a faithful
minister. In these days, my friends, we need to know
who is a faithful minister. Many people actually
have the idea that because a man stands in the
pulpit that it necessarily means he is there, of
God. They do not realize that God's Word says that
sometimes the devil stands in the pu ...
