THE POWER OF PRAYER
Jesse M. Hendley
Matthew 6:6
I want to speak to you on "The Power Of Prayer."
There is POWER IN PRAYER.
Early Ministry
I first learned this in the early days of my ministry
at Colonial Hills Church. God was blessing. We were
on the air. People were coming and crowding the
doors. We dug a basement. It became evident we had to
build, but we were in real depression days. I
remember when the deacons came to me and said, "We
can't get money anywhere," and it came upon my heart
in that moment to say this (and it was of the Spirit,
I am sure), that we would ask God for a token that He
wanted us to build, and I suggested that we ask Him
for a $5,000 check.
Just a few days later I was sitting before the
microphone in a radio station uptown and the
secretary slipped a note to me saying, "Your wife has
just called to say you have received a check for
$5,000." Exactly the amount we had prayed for! The
check was written by a godly lady in another city
where I had been in a revival meeting, and our evan-
gelistic party had been entertained in her home. She
came by our church, saw the crowded conditions, knew
nothing at all about the prayer, went home and wrote
the check for $5,000.
Not long after that my wife and I drove her home. She
was a spiritual woman, wealthy, walking with the
Lord, really in touch with Him. After lunch when we
started to leave she said, "I've been praying and God
gave me the word for you: "Owe no man anything." He
doesn't want you to be in debt but free to preach His
Word and evangelize. He says you need this money,"
and she handed me a $10,000 gold bond. Back in the
days of the depression, that was money, real money. I
learned that God meant what He said when He said, "I
will supply all your need." He will do exactly that.
