Prayer-a Necessity-for The Presence And Power Of God
Jesse M. Hendley
Matthew 6:5
A Necessity if we are to have the Presence and Power of God.
Turn with me to Matthew 6:5, as we study God's Word. We are living in days of great need and the need is God and the power of God, and the presence and power of God will come only through believing prayer. In Matthew 6:5 Jesus says, "And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward." Verse 6, "But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly." Verse 7, "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do; for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking." Verse 9, "After this manner therefore pray ye: . . "
Now notice in verse 5, "When thou prayest." Verse 6, "When thou prayest." Verse 7, "When ye pray." Then verse 9, "Therefore pray ye." Our Lord in the Sermon on the Mount then speaks much about prayer.
I would like to call your attention at the very outset that our Lord does not COMMAND us to pray. He doesn't say you ought to pray. He assumes that every child of God will pray, so He says, "When thou prayest, When ye pray . . . After this manner pray ye." He doesn't command it. He doesn't say you ought to do it. God Almighty takes it for granted that every Christian will pray, will take time really to pray.
Then notice the matter of HOW to pray. Our Lord says in verse 6, "When thou prayest enter into thy closet and shut thy door." Closet prayer, secret prayer, prayer alone with God is an essential in the Christian life. Let me ask you, how is it with your devotional life? How is it with your prayer life? Inevitably this will tell you how much ...
