THE DEATHLESS CITY WHERE MEN SHALL NEVER DIE
Jesse M. Hendley
Revelation 22:1
This precious Book, the Bible, closes with a picture
of the Holy City, a place God has prepared for men and
women who love Him, a City where we will spend
eternity with Him on a new earth.
The first thing we want to notice is that it will be a
City charged with LIFE. TRUE LIFE! Now this is a
message within itself. I wish space allowed to discuss
what God means by LIFE. If I were to ask you what is
meant by LIFE, what would you say? We read, in
Revelation 22:1, "He showed me a pure river of the
water of life, clear as crystal, which bare all
manner of fruits and yielded her fruit every month
and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of
the nations." The water of life; the tree of life.
What is life?
"Well," you say, "life is existence."
But is that all? Is eternal life simply eternal
existence? I have seen many people existing, but I
wouldn't call their existing LIVING. If you were to go
to a drunkard's home and see that poor wife over the
scrub-board, eking out a miserable existence for those
starved, crying kiddies, would you call that LIFE? No.
If you were to go to the tenement sections of the
larger cities, would you call what you see there LIFE?
If you go into the nightclubs and see men and women
drinking, and swapping wives and husbands in hotel
rooms, would you say that is LIFE? No. It is
existence, but it isn’t LIFE. A man may make a huge
sum of money and get ahead of other businessmen and
have ulcers and a broken body, but he isn't truly
happy, and when he comes to the end of the journey,
he'd exchange his money for good health and happiness.
So having money isn't LIFE. THE NEAREST APPROACH TO
LIFE HERE ON EARTH IS THE LIFE OF A CHRISTIAN, WHO,
BEING BORN AGAIN AND HAVING RECEIVED THE LIFE OF GOD
INTO HIS SOUL, IS ENGAGED IN THE SERVICE OF THE LORD,
GIVING HIMSELF IN UNSELFISH SERVICE TO MEN IN ...
