In Everything Give Thanks
Jesse M. Hendley
I Thessalonians 5:18
Our text is found in I Thessalonians 5:18, "In
everything give thanks: for this is the will of God
concerning you." God's will. We want to know what
God's will is in everything. "In everything give
thanks." We have Paul saying in Philippians again,
"Rejoice always." In this particular passage, these
words in the Greek, "In everything give thanks," the
word for give thanks is in the imperative mood,
meaning it is a word of command. Our Lord commands His
people that wherever they find themselves to give
thanks. This is a strong statement. It doesn't say,
"In some things." It says, "IN ALL things give
thanks."
Life is filled with different things isn't it? He
doesn't say we should give thanks for everything in
this statement, because the Greek preposition is in.
It says, "In everything give thanks," God doesn't say
here that we should give thanks for everything, yet it
is implied. If you are giving thanks IN everything
then you are giving thanks FOR everything. Paul does
say in this other passage of Scripture, "Rejoice
always." My friends, we should give thanks to our God
for everything. This is profound, but true. This is
real spirituality. The Bible is so different from
man's thinking. God's thoughts are above our thoughts
as the heavens are above the earth, and the Bible
tells us to do things that are not on the normal plane
and the human plane of thinking. Give thanks to God
for everything? YES. Everything He gives us? YES.
Everything that comes our way? YES. Why? Because, in
one sense, everything that comes into our lives is
permitted and sent by God. GOD KNOWS
He created us; He knew our lives before hand. That is
the foreknowledge of God. Everybody will agree that
God is a God of foreknowledge. He knew our joys and
our sorrows too. We believe that God knew the joyful
things that would come into our lives and saw
