Colossians 1:16-29
"By HIM, Jesus Christ, were all things created, that
are in heaven and that are in earth, visible and
invisible, whether they be thrones or dominions or
principalities or powers. All things were created by
Him, and for Him."
That is a very strong statement, found in Colossians
1:16, giving the DEITY, the SOVEREIGNTY, and the
CREATORSHIP, of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is
nothing in creation that He did not create. Jesus is
not a created Being. HE IS CREATOR. And by Him all
things consist. Verse 17: "He is before all things,
and by Him all things consist." That word consist
means to HOLD TOGETHER.
"And He is the Head of the body, the church: He is the
Beginning, the first born from the dead; that in all
things He might have the pre-eminence." Jesus is the
Head of the church. To think lightly of the church is
to think lightly of the Lord Jesus Christ. The church
is composed of every born-again believer in Christ.
The church is not a building. The church is composed
of believers in Christ, wherever they may be. He said,
"Wherever two or three are gathered together in My
Name, there am I in the midst."
Notice, "that in all things HE might have the
pre-eminence." That is God's plan. Today we hear a lot
about "church programs" and so on. They are all right.
I haven't one thing to say against them. I have given
my life to the church. I am for the church. I am a
PASTOR'S evangelist. I boost the church. But friends,
listen to me. It makes no difference what the work may
be: teaching Sunday School, being an evangelist, being
a pastor, being a superintendent---whatever it is
CHRIST is to have the PRE-EMINENCE. Our business is to
bring men and women and boys and girls into contact
with Jesus Christ to exalt HIM! That in all things He
might have the pre-eminence.
"For it pleased the Father that in Him should all
fullness dwell ...
