THE LIFE OF FAITH CONTRASTED WITH THE LIFE OF SELF

Now if you have your Bibles, I want you to turn with
me to Hebrews, chapter 11 and verse 1, and chapter 12
and verse 1. I hope you have your notebooks and
pencils with you, friends, as we study together the
LIFE OF FAITH over against the LIFE OF SELF. For
remember, if you are not living the life of FAITH,
which means dependence upon God utterly, a real,
living faith that brings you in communion with God and
contact with God and manifests the life of God in your
heart and life, then you are living the life of SELF.
The self-life ends in hell; the faith life ends in the
Holy City. That is the teaching of the Bible. There is
a lake of fire for the unsaved, who live for self and
forget God; and there is the Holy City for men and
women of faith.

In Hebrews 12:1 we learned that the "great cloud of
witnesses" is literally the "great cloud of
testifiers," those who have testified that it pays to
live the life of faith, and it refers us to Hebrews
11, to those great worthies, those who have gone on
ahead of us and who testify to us from their lives
recorded in Scripture that it pays to live for God.

We are going to see now a wonderful statement. I told
you that the Christian life BEGINS with faith
(Ephesians 2:8) and CONTINUES in faith (Hebrews 11).
The emphasis on faith in Romans and Galatians and John
is that it is the faith that brings us in contact with
God to the saving of our souls, faith for salvation.
The emphasis of Hebrews 11 is that when you HAVE a
real, genuine salvation-faith and live the life of
faith, it will be plain to you and to others that your
life is lived for God.

I want to prove that to you. We read in Hebrews 11:1
and 2, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped
for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the
elders obtained a good report." That isn't quite the
