INCENTIVES TO RIGHT LIVING

Colossians 3

If you have your Bible there, turn with me, please, to
Colossians, the third chapter. There we have the
glorious fact of CHRIST LIVING IN OUR HEARTS. "If ye
then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are
above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
Set your affection on things above, not on things on
the earth, for ye are dead, and your life is hid with
Christ in God. When Christ who is our life shall
appear, then shall we also appear with Him in glory."

Now that is an important passage! We are UNITED WITH
THE RISEN CHRIST. We are to set our affection on
THINGS ABOVE. We are dead, and our LIFE is hid with
Christ in God. Christ is our very life! There is no
eternal life but the CHRIST-LIFE, and Christ-life,
friends, will manifest itself! It cannot do otherwise.
Christ could not hide Himself. It was impossible. His
fame was made known abroad. No one in whom Christ
dwells can keep quiet about Him. Neither will people
keep quiet about you as He lives through you! You will
be, in some measure, like Christ. The Christian life
is the life of Christ, lived through the Christian.

Now verse 5 gives the practical side of this truth.
"Mortify." That word in the Greek means to put to
death! You remember the famous poem "Thanatopsis"? It
is a poem about death. The Greek word "thanatos" is
the word for death. Well, here we have the verb from
that word, and it is in the imperative. It is a
command. "Mortify---put to death---SIN in your life!"
"Lusts of the flesh, uncleanness, inordinate affection
(husbands loving other wives, wives loving other
husbands), evil concupiscence, and covetousness which
is idolatry; for which things' sake the wrath of God
cometh on the children of disobedience." All those
things are characteristic of children of disobedience,
children God has created but who are disobeying Him,
not living a godly life; God ...
