RULES FOR PRAYER

Matthew 6:5-8

May God give us today a new realization of what it
means to pray; looking to His Word to see what are His
rules for prayer and in what manner we should pray to
please Him. We must remember that God alone can answer
prayer. We must remember that God has laid down
certain rules whereby we should pray. Is there
anything greater than knowing how to contact God,
knowing how to get things from God, knowing how to
fellowship with God in real communion? Then we should
study the rules for prayer in the Word of God. Many
times we do not get answers to our prayers because we
do not keep the rules God has given us. Let us study
about this today from his Word, in Matthew chapter six
beginning with verse 5.

"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the
hypocrites are, for they love to pray standing in the
synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that
they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, they
have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter
into thy closet, and when thou hast shut the door,
pray to thy Father which is in secret, and thy Father
which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. But
when you pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen
do, for they think they shall be heard for their much
speaking. Be not like unto them, for your Father
knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask
Him." God says in this passage that prayer must be
genuine, it must be secret, it must be childlike, and
it must be intelligent.

Prayer, to please God, must be genuine. "And when thou
prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites." Now the
"hypocrites" were just putting on an act. They were
just pretending. Their whole heart was not in it. They
were playing at it insincerely, appearing to be
something they were not, as an actor playing a
