LACK OF TRUTH, MERCY AND KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

Hosea 4:1-17

In Hosea, chapter four, we read these words: "Hear the
word of the Lord, ye children of Israel: for the Lord
hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land,
because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of
God in the land. By swearing, and lying, and killing,
and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out,
and blood toucheth blood. Therefore shall the land
mourn, and every one that dwelleth therein shall
languish, with the beasts of the field, and with the
fowls of heaven; yea, the fishes of the sea shall also
be taken away."

That is a terrible indictment. God is speaking
primarily to Israel, but don't forget, the Lord
changes not in His character. God has a controversy
elsewhere in His Book, with ALL nations, in the book
of Isaiah. A controversy is an argument that has to be
settled. Now what is the controversy about?

In this passage I have just read, let me call your
attention to three primary, fundamental sins that
cause destruction for this nation and every nation.
Thank God, one day He is going to blot it all out. Now
these three fundamental sins may not be the ones you
would pick out as America's sins today, but they are
the three that God picked out. They were Israel's
primary sins. And today, these same sins are the
reason for controversy between God and the nations of
the earth.

No Truth

First, God says there is "NO TRUTH" in the land. That
means the land does not face the facts, conditions as
they actually are. Just one example of this is the
liquor business. There is not one good thing to be
said about liquor. Not one thing. In the old days,
they used to tell people that liquor was "good for
heart-trouble," and there really was a time, centuries
ago, when other medicines and drugs were not known,
and liquor was the only thing they knew to give in
