THE DECEITFUL HEART

Jeremiah 17:9
My text is found in Jeremiah, Chapter 17 and verse 9,
"The heart is deceitful above all things, and
desperately wicked; who can know it?" Now that is a
solemn statement from God's Word and I want you to
listen to me now as I bring this message. There are
three thoughts I want to bring to you. First, God's
statement about the human heart. Second, God's demand
for a pure heart. We want to investigate and find out
what a pure heart is. Third, the impossibility of
going to Heaven with a wicked heart. Our hearts must
be clean, cleansed by the Blood of the Lord Jesus
Christ, if we are to go to Heaven when we leave this
life.
Now, notice the text. First of all, God's statement
about the human heart. GOD SAYS THAT THE HEART IS
DECEITFUL ABOVE ALL THINGS, AND IS DESPERATELY WICKED,
WHO CAN KNOW IT? Deceitful! You know that is so. I'll
just give you a simple little illustration that will
make it plain to you. You remember back yonder when
you were a boy or girl and you first fell in love, and
you thought that that fellow or that girl was the
"only one," and you never would love anyone else for
it would be impossible. But you know, after a little
while, that attitude vanished away and somebody else
came along. You laugh at that illustration but that
shows the heart is deceitful, doesn't it? The heart is
deceitful. Yes, you were in love with somebody and you
thought if anything happened you would be miserable
forever. But there was a change, and you revealed by
your actions the solemn truth that the heart was
deceitful above all things. Now it is a sad truth,
friends, and in spiritual things it is not a laughable
matter. Every one of us is born with a deceitful
heart, and a desperately wicked heart.
Last night I had the joy of praying with a dear lady
and her child who came to the Lord Jesus Christ. My,
it was ...
