INTRO: I heard about this guy whose friend was opening a new business and he thought, 'well he's opening a new business this Wednesday, I better send something there by way of recognition.' So he called up the local florist and said 'My friend's opening a new business next Wednesday and I want you to send him a big bouquet of flowers, something appropriate and put my name on it.' So on Wednesday morning he went to his friend's grand opening and there were a lot of bouquets of flowers there. He looked around for the one with his name on it and he was really let down. It was a funeral wreath, a big, big banner on it said 'Rest in Peace.' He was mad. He called up the florist and said 'That's not the kind of thing you send to the grand opening of a new business!' The florist said 'You think you've got problems, you think about me. Out there somewhere is a funeral with a bouquet of flowers that has a banner on it reading 'Good luck in your new location.'
We're going to look at a funeral today that's recorded in John chapter 11. The funeral of Lazarus. At Lazarus' funeral something remarkable happened - Lazarus was resurrected from the dead by Jesus. It's a powerful account that reveals to us some very important truths about God. The Bible has more to say about death than 'good luck in your new location.' These are truths that can give us comfort and assurance and hope in our day of suffering and grief.
I. THE RESURRECTION OF LAZARUS REVEALS GOD'S DETERMINATION 1-16 (4)
1) Mary and Martha, two sisters who were close friends of Jesus, sent Him word that Lazarus, their brother, was seriously sick.
In verse 4 we read:
'When He heard this, Jesus said, 'This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God's glory so that God's Son may be glorified through it.''
