Read vs 1

The wars now over, God had given Israel rest from
their enemies that surrounded them, and Joshua old and
near death calls all of the leaders of the people and
gives them his final instructions.

Read vss 2-3

Every one of these Jews were eyewitnesses to the
mighty works of God. Joshua told them that they have
seen what the Lord has done to the other nations, in
their presence. This instruction sounds very familiar.
Deuteronomy 4:9 (read). It was Moses, before his death
that told them THE SAME THING. They needed to be
reminded again not to forget what they were
eyewitnesses to. The reason? The Lord, God, it is He
that engaged in war for you. This is what He said that
He would do. Exodus 14:14, Deuteronomy 20:4, Joshua
10:14,42.

Read vs 4

Joshua said, "I have done what the Lord has commanded
me to do as far as dividing the land is concerned".

5 And the LORD your God, he shall expel them from
before you, and drive them from out of your sight; and
ye shall possess their land, as the LORD your God hath
promised unto you.

Although the land was divided and some of the tribes
had taken possession of the land, some of the land
still remained for the taking. It was already divided
and the tribes had to go in the land and get the
enemies out of it. But rest assure that if they
believed God they would remember that the Lord already
told them that He would drive out the enemies of the
land for them - that He would go before them. They had
nothing to worry about, BUT ONLY IF THEY OBEYED THE
LORD. If they didn't, they had a lot to worry about.

6 Be ye therefore very courageous to keep and to do
all that is written in the book of the law of Moses,
that ye turn not aside therefrom [to] the right hand
or [to] the left;
