Read vss 1-4
God repeats instructions given in the book of Exodus
concerning the lamp stand. The flame was to be
continually burning and the children of Israel were
responsible for bringing the oil for the lamp.
Read vss 5-9
This bread is the bread of the presence, or shewbread;
again, an instruction given in Exodus. The bread was
to be twelve large loaves placed in two rows. Incense
was placed on the table and the cakes offered on the
altar to the Lord. Each Sabbath when the bread was
replaced, it was the priest's portion, their regular
share.
Read vss 10-16
This is instruction given by God concerning a young
man who blasphemed (cursed) the name of the Lord. The
instruction of the Lord was clear. All those who
heard this young man curse and blaspheme God were to
lay their hands on him, to be witnesses against him or
to rid themselves of any guilt by the hearing of the
blasphemy, then the entire congregation was to stone
him to death.
17 And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to
death.
Again a reference to capital punishment. You take a
life by way of murder, you lose yours.
18 And he that killeth a beast shall make it good;
beast for beast.
19 And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as
he hath done, so shall it be done to him;
20 Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth:
as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be
done to him again.
21 And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it:
and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.
This is the law of retribution, called the "lex
talionis." It was not to be used as a law of private
revenge, but was a law enacting exact justice, PUBLIC
JUSTICE.
22 Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the
stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the
LORD your God.
