The Book of Acts Chapter 18 (33 of 44)
Dr. Harley Howard
1 After these things Paul departed from Athens, and
came to Corinth;
2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in
Pontus, lately come from Italy, with his wife
Priscilla; (because that Claudius had commanded all
Jews to depart from Rome:) and came unto them.
3 And because he was of the same craft, he abode with
them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were
tentmakers.
After Paul's encounters in Athens, he went into
Corinth where he met a couple, Aquila and his wife
Priscilla, who were leather-crafters or tentmakers,
and since Paul was of that same occupation, he worked
and stayed with them for a while.
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every sabbath, and
persuaded the Jews and the Greeks.
Paul continued to follow his habit of going into the
synagogues and to have discourse about Christ with all
those who came into the synagogue. This verse says
that he persuaded Jews and the Greeks. In other
words, his ministry had an effect on those who heard
and responded to the truth.
Here's a note here about the effectiveness of a
ministry. Paul preached the gospel and taught the
word of God to multitudes of people. Some believed
what the word said and others did not.
* There is a tendency of us who preach and teach truth
and of those who proclaim the gospel to others to take
unnecessary blame on ourselves whenever we see those
we teach respond incorrectly to the truth. We are not
responsible. The hearer is. This is made clear in 1st
Thessalonians 2:13 (read).
1st Thessalonians 2:13
13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing,
because, when ye received the word of God which ye
heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men,
but as it is in truth, the word of God, which
effectually worketh also in you that believe.
