1 Now these [are] the priests and the Levites that
went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and
Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra,

From verses 1-7 are listed the 22 leaders of the
priest who had returned from Babylon with Zerubbabel
and Jeshua.

8 Moreover the Levites: Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel,
Sherebiah, Judah, [and] Mattaniah, [which was] over
the thanksgiving, he and his brethren.

Mattaniah was one of the worship leaders, who was over
the songs of praise.

12 And in the days of Joiakim were priests, the chief
of the fathers: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah,
Hananiah;

Verses 12-21 list the names of the priestly families
during the days of Joiakim who was a priest and son of
Jeshua the high priest.

22 The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and
Johanan, and Jaddua, [were] recorded chief of the
fathers: also the priests, to the reign of Darius the
Persian.

The Darius in this verse probably was Darius II, who
ruled Persia from 423-404 BC. Johanan was high priest
in 408 BC.

23 The sons of Levi, the chief of the fathers, [were]
written in the book of the chronicles, even until the
days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

There was a book of chronicles or annals, which was an
official record book of the heads of the Levites up to
the days of Johanan.

24 And the chief of the Levites: Hashabiah, Sherebiah,
and Jeshua the son of Kadmiel, with their brethren
over against them, to praise [and] to give thanks,
according to the commandment of David the man of God,
ward over against ward.

Look at the worship of these leaders. As men were
serving in the temple, some of these associates were
there doing nothing but praising God and confessing
His greatness, according to the David's commandment
seen in 1st Chronicles 23.

25 Mattaniah, and Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam,
Talmon, Akkub, [were] porters keeping the ward ...
