From Slavery through to the Promised Land

On a journey from slavery in Egypt to an unseen Promised Land across the Jordan people were hungry because they didn't have enough. They had seen God's angel of death pass over the doorposts of their homes in Egypt because they had been covered with the blood of the Lamb. They had witnessed Pharoah forced by God to set them free. They had watched as God's awesome power parted the Red Sea to give them crossing and then closed on their enemy's chariots to give them freedom. Yet now they were on a journey through the desert and they were hungry because they didn't have enough.

On a hillside just above the shore of the Sea of Galilee, not long before the Passover Feast, people were hungry because they too didn't have enough. They had come to see Jesus with their stomach's empty of bread and their lives empty of hope. There were 5,000 of them and the disciples threw up their hands in despair. "Eight months wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!" said Philip. Andrew spoke up and said, "Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?" They had a little but they were still hungry because they didn't have enough.

On this Sunday morning, where the Passover meal is set on the Lord's table, people are hungry because they too may not have enough. Their employment may be gone. Their finances may be few. Their bodies may be sick. Their families may be broken. Their spirits may be chained to a destructive addiction. Their souls may be haunted by a debilitating fear. Their souls may be trembling because they've begun to sense their mortality. They've come here to see Jesus. They may have a little. But they're hungry because they don't have enough.
