What's the Point of Life?
M. Kenneth Lyon
Ecclesiastes 7:24
January 17, 1999
It's a question that parents don't look forward to answering, yet they know if they have children it's going to happen. Usually around first, second grade, one of them comes in and says, "Where did I come from?" Just such an occasion occurred. A young mom, her son freshly in from school. He poses the question. With a sharp intake of air she prays fervently and dives in. Now's as good a time as any. And she starts telling him about all of the mystery of life. He listens for about 30 minutes, eyes glazed over, finally interrupts and says, "Mom, Jamie comes from San Diego. Where do I come from?" Sometimes we're answering the wrong question, but it is an important question to ask. Where do I come from? Where am I going? Why am I here? It is a question that some people ask with more fervency than others. There's a man by the name of George Cameron who asks it every single day. You see, George self- admittedly was not a person who took care of himself very well. He drank too much, partied too hard. He didn't really think he would last too long in life, and sure enough the abuses of his body caught up with him. He needed a kidney transplant. It was failing fast. And then they got the call. A young man, football player in high school, tragic accident, struck by lightning. The family wanted to donate whatever organs might be salvageable. His kidneys were available. The transplant occurred. George faired well. But ever since that time, he has asked over and over to himself, daily, Why am I here? There must be some purpose for me. There must be some reason. There must be some rhyme to this. Those who are involved in organ transplants, dealing with families on the giving end and receiving end, talk about the heightened awareness of having a purposeful life on the part of those persons who receive the gift of organ donation. They want to make something of whatever time they have left.
