You see a box sitting up here. Wonder what's in the box? It says MUMC, Matthews United Methodist Church. If you were to think about Matthews United Methodist Church, what would come to mind? What are the things that would be the hallmarks of God's church in this place? Well, let's look at some of the things in the box that we have. Hmm, interesting things. A rope, I guess if you wanna hang around. A paintbrush. Oh, a bible, I'm so glad there's a bible here. That's good. Let's see, what else is in here. A cookbook, that's good. Hmm. What is this? Oh, my. Man, look at all the words! This thing goes on forever. I should've known. It's one of Mark's sermons. Well, there are other things in the box to be sure. There's, oh gee, there's a hammer. I guess that would be for the Habitat thing that's going on. A towel, hmm. I wonder what that's for. And, peanut butter. That's a good thing. A shoebox, well we all know about that. Let's see, what else do we have in here. A flashlight, a diaper (a clean diaper). Let's see ... a roadmap, a pacifier, a frying pan. We do cook a lot of meals, I guess. Let's see, what else? Oh, look at this! A basketball, the wrong color, but its a basketball. Oh, here's something interesting. What in the world is this? Hair coloring. It's got some fine print. Let's see what it says... "Specially formulated for female pastors who are turning forty in December." Wonder who that could be? All in all, it's an interesting box, isn't it? Hmm.
Matthews United Methodist Church. What do you think of when you think of MUMC? When you see the set of buildings here, when you drive by, when you participate, what are our hallmarks? What sets us apart? What makes us unique? We know that our Carolina Panthers, of whom I hope you are a great fan, have had a difficult season. Now last week they won. Today we can hope, definitely pray, that they will win today but ...
