INTRODUCTION: Okay geography nerds, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania is renowned for a confluence. A confluence is when two or more rivers converge. In Pittsburgh, the Allegheny River and the Monongahela River converge to form a third river. What is the name of the third river? The Ohio. Point State Park marks the location where these three rivers meet. For years this convergence was lent great strategic value to the region.
?Today I'm going to talk about a SPIRITUALconvergence of three resurrection streams. In our Easter sermon series, we have considered the importance of Jesus' resurrection to our faith, power and hope. These three resurrection streams converge in the waters of baptism.
I. BAPTISM IS A DEMONSTRATION OF FAITH
Mt.28:19-20 "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
What does it mean to be baptized? In the most basic sense of the word, it means to be immersed into water. That immersion shows that the person being saved is investing their faith specifically in the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. This is reenacted every time someone is baptized as they are immersed and resurrected out of the water. It pictures a death, burial, and resurrection - that's the gospel.
Romans 6:4 "We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."
That's another reason why a sprinkling of water is not a BIBLICAL baptism. There is no "gospel" in it.
