WORLDLY CHOICE
Genesis 13:5-13
Stephen Whitney
Charity Allen was 17 when she turned down a lead role in NBC'S popular daytime drama Another World. Five years later, at 23, the singer and actress thought for a moment, perhaps remembering that day when NBC'S casting director offered her the part of a lead band singer Maggie Corey - along with a $20,000 weekly salary,
a star's home in Manhattan and a private limousine. This proposal was all the more enticing to Charity because her family was struggling to make ends meet in 1994.
The catch? She would have to portray a character whose choices included premarital sex, adultery and abortion - all of which conflicted with her Christian values. Not to mention that her parents didn't even allow her to watch soap operas.
"Do you want time to consider it, Charity?" the director asked.
But she didn't have to think twice. "There's no way I can ever
be a part of that," Charity said. "I'll never allow myself to represent those things."
More than five years had passed since that day. I really haven't regretted my decision, she said. "NBC was offering me everything in the world to sign away my soul." In hindsight she is convinced
she made the right decision. She said, "Fall in love with God in
a way that you'd be willing to sacrifice the things of the world."
Oswald Chambers - "To love the world as it is is the wrong
kind of love . . . It means I am the friend of the system of
things which does not take God into account."
Background :3
Bethel - was 10 miles north of Jerusalem in the hill country (12:8). It was a good place for grass to grow on the hillsides.
Abraham had pitched his tent there and built an altar to the Lord (12:8) before he went to Egypt because there was a famine.
CONFLICT :5-7
God had greatly blessed Abraham and Lot with material possessions of flocks (sheep and goats) herds (cattle).
God chooses to bless those he wants to bless.
