INTRODUCTION

We're in a series of studies that I've titled "Our Man in Crete," and we are picking up in Titus Chapter Two, Verse One.

We're studying Paul's tremendous letter to Titus. I've grown to love this young man, Titus.

I sat in the front row this evening, recalling when I first started as a pastor. I remember I was just a young man called to my very first church, a new church in Toka, Tennessee. That church was only a couple of years old and had gotten up to 120 members when they had a good old-fashioned Baptist church fight. Can I get an Amen in the house? Half the members moved across the street and began having services in the pastor's garage. So, I was called to pastor the original church. It was a mess in a lot of ways. Only thirty-six were in my first Sunday service, including babies, cats, and dogs. I understand Titus' situation.

Paul has mentored him. Titus served with Paul. The Bible doesn't tell us when and where he was saved, but he'd been mentored.

Titus ministered with the Apostle Paul. He's mentioned nine times in 2 Corinthians but not in Acts for some reason. Titus traveled with Paul on Paul's second missionary journey, and Paul loved him. Paul wrote of missing Titus in 2 Corinthians. Later, Paul expressed his joy that Titus had been refreshed.

Titus wasn't just his preacher boy; he wasn't just Paul's mentee. Paul called him his "partner and fellow worker" in the ministry.

And so here you have Titus, who has been sent to the immature churches in Crete. Those churches were acting up and acting like a lot of Baptists. Can I get an Amen? They weren't doing what they ought to be doing.
