Text: Proverbs 19:11-20

A man with a gun goes into a bank and demands their money. Once he is given the money, he turns to a customer and asks, "Did you see me rob this bank?" The man replied, "Yes sir, I did." The robber then shot him in the temple, killing him instantly. He then turned to a couple standing next to him and asked the man, "Did you see me rob this bank?" The man replied, "No sir, I didn't, but my wife did!"

Introduction:

We are going through this wonderful Book of Proverbs, and it is filled with all kinds of practical advice! It tells us how we can please our God in heaven, and avoid the pitfalls of the unrighteous! Solomon is the writer, and he tells us as a loving Father would tell his Son, to seek God with all your heart! With that in mind, let us see what God wants us to learn from this passage today!

Body:

11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.

Sometimes we are better off just allowing God to take care of a transgression without even getting involved. If the truth was known, we all need the mercy and grace of God to make it and we are to do the same with others! The word for "discretion" is: seh'-kel, say'-kel

From H7919; intelligence; by implication success: - discretion, knowledge, policy, prudence, sense, understanding, wisdom, wise.

The intelligent man knows how to stay out of other people's business. We could say they are knowledgeable, wise, and understanding about how to live life because they are familiar with the Word of God! He knows how to detain his anger, and manage insults when it really doesn't even matter!
discretion: Patience and restraint are virtues of wisdom (16:32); rashness and violent outbursts of rage are not.

The contrast is between the hasty anger that is labeled as folly and the deliberate malice which produces hatred (Ps 37:7).
