CIT: Paul instructed the Roman believers that they were adopted into the family of God and were Sons of God.

Proposition: The Spirit of God is the Spirit of Adoption for the believer.
Question: How does the Spirit work in Adoption?

INTRODUCTION:

Romans 8 is considered the greatest chapter on the Christian life in all of Scripture. In the first verse Paul tells us that were are justified. Vs. 1, there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Then he moves to the great doctrine of sanctification. That is, God makes us holy. He calls us to put to death the old man of sin. Now, Paul moves to the one of the most profound and joyous doctrines, Adoption.

Adoption describes the personal relationship that salvation gives us with God and with his people.

In these verses we find how the Spirit of God works in our lives when we are adopted into the family.

I) THE SPIRIT OF HOLINESS - Vs. 14 "All those who are lead by the Spirit of God are Sons of God."

The Holy Spirit is Holy. In Romans 1:4 He is called the "Spirit of Holiness."

The very goal of our regeneration by the Spirit is the transformation of our character into the likeness of Jesus Christ. Romans 8:29

In this verse, to lead by the Spirit, is to be lead into holiness.
We are often tempted to interpret the Spirit's leading as guidance. That is what job should I take, what college should I attend, what person should I marry? All of this is important. God certainly does give us guidance in those areas. But that is not what he has in mind here.

Christians are made alive by the Spirit and that same Spirit leads them into holiness.

Believers live their lives under the control of the Holy Spirit.
