In 2000 the downfall of Cheng Kejie, former vice chairman of China's parliament, was very public. The legislator was convicted of taking $5 million in bribes to fund an adulterous fling with his mistress and gambling trips. In reporting the death of the most senior Communist Chinese official ever executed on charges of corruption, state television took the unusual step airing his tense courtroom confession.

His execution was at the center of a massive anticorruption campaign that included investigations into 23,000 graft cases.

As many as 200 local and national officials are accused in a multibillion-dollar scam to evade tariffs on imported cars, oil and luxury goods. This case was explosive because of the breath of the accusations, which stretched from the local level to the national customs and security services.
