In 1971 Joni Mitchell wrote a song called "Woodstock" after the musical festival held in upstate New York in the summer of 1969.

The song begins with remembering going to Woodstock.

I came upon a child of God he was walking along the road
And I asked him, "Where are you going?"
I'm going down to Yasgur's farm
I'm going to join in a rock 'n' roll band
I'm gonna camp out on the land
I'm gonna try and get my soul free.

In the song she pictured the human race trapped in a "bargain" with the devil. The words to the last chorus were:

We are stardust billion year old carbon
We are golden caught in the devil's bargain and
we've got to get ourselves back to the garden.

She was urging her listeners to seek a simpler, more peaceful existence. She was referring to the Garden of Eden where everything was peaceful and Adam and Eve met with God every evening until they make a bargain with the devil.

In the play Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare prince Escalus is the ruler of the Italian city. There is one line where he is told, "'Tis one thing to be tempted, Escalus, another thing to fall."
