Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone
Josh Malone
Hebrews 4:12-13
Series: The 5 Solas
On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg. That moment is considered the key moment in the history of the reformation.
Protestant churches like ours can trace our history back to moments like these.
Luther and the other reformers were calling the Catholic Church to repentance in the 16th century.
The 95 Theses was not Luther's first, and Justo Gonzalez noted in his work "The Story of Christianity" that while Luther had expected a previous work to cause a stir he did not expect his 95 Theses to. Well, of course it did.
A key to Luther's 95 Theses, among other issues, was his confronting the INDULGENCES being charged by the Catholic Church. This was a price paid for the remission of temporal punishment for sins, a way out of what Catholic teach as purgatory.
In particular in Germany John Tetzel was over the selling of indulgences. Gonzalez notes Tetzel was "unscrupulous" and made "scandalous claims" he and his preachers said things like, "the cross of the seller of indulgences has a much power as the cross of Christ." It was said, "as soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs." (Gonzalez, 21.)
Ultimately Luther and his 95 Theses is one event that help spark the Reformation. Others like John Calvin also played major roles.
The Reformation is a key event, that was made up of several events and people ... that are a key to church history. We are a PROTESTANT church.
Protestant churches hold very different beliefs from the Roman Catholic Church. The reformation was a NEEDED event and church are to always be reforming or aligning themselves more and more with the Scriptures.
