Title: An Unrequited Love (13)
Series: Hosea
Author: Robert Dawson
Text: Hosea 11:1-12
In college I worked and delivered furniture for Badcock Home Furnishings. I became good friends with J.Mc. who ran the warehouse and deliveries. He was in his mid to late 30s at the time. I loved that guy with all my heart and thrilled to hear after I left that J.Mc became a Christian and involved in his church.
Long before I knew J.Mc, he was an exceptional athlete. From the time he entered high school he played varsity in 4 different sports, basketball, baseball, track and football. While he was excellent at all of them, he excelled in football. He was a running back. By the time he was a sophomore in high school he was being courted by Alabama and the great Bear Bryant.
My boss, who had grown up in, lived in and worked in that area his whole life and avidly followed sports said that he was the best athlete to come through. Everyone I ever spoke to about it agreed. That was high praise considering two men from the area were the starting running backs for two different NFL teams.
I guess the question you are asking is, why was my friend running the warehouse for a local Badcock? As a teenager he made some sinful choices. His senior year his girlfriend became pregnant. He put all his dreams on hold to take care of a family he did not plan on having.
J.Mc was happy. He had a good family. The entire community knew and loved him but there was always this question hanging about. "What could have been?" What could he have achieved in life? What could John have accomplished on the gridiron, track or baseball field in college or possibly the pros?
We have all known people who failed to reach their potential. Some know the pain of watching their own children throw away what they knew could have been a bright and productive future. It is heartbreaking.
As we move into Hosea 11, we find a nation that failed to live up to its potential. The children of I ...
