?If you have your Bible, please turn to Joshua chapter 24. I want to speak to you today about "A Stake in the Ground," putting a stake in the ground.
?Now, we have a phrase that we use in America. It's called Famous Last Words. Famous last words can be used like an irony, "O, they said this, and that was the last thing they said." But you can tell a lot about a person and what's important to a person when they're speaking to you for the last time. I had run across a couple of deathbed sayings from some famous people in Christianity.
?William Carey died in 1834. He's called the Father of Modern Missions. He gave his life to India. He said this on his deathbed: "When I'm gone, speak less of Dr. Carey and more of Dr. Carey's Savior."
?Susanna Wesley, the mother of John and Charles Wesley is called the Mother of Methodism. She had 19 children, 9 of them died in infancy. She said, as her children gathered around her bed when she was in her early 70s, "Children, when I'm gone, sing a song of praise to our God." That was her way of saying, "Hey, don't mourn my passing. I'm going to be with the Lord."
?The famous last words of John Newton, the man that wrote "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me," he said toward the end of his life, "My mind almost gone." He could barely see. And he said, "But I know two things: I'm a great sinner, and Jesus is a great Savior."
?My friend Ed Hinson, who's been to our church several times. He was the host of The King is Coming. He was a professor at Liberty University for many, many years. He died in July of 2022. And his daughter told me, 'You know, my dad was pretty much in a comatose state, but right at the end the Lord gave him an opportunity to talk to us. And he got off the ventilator, and he was able to speak. And his grandkids and his children were wanting to kn ...
