?If you have your Bible, please turn to Joshua chapter 1. I want to speak to you today about "Stepping Up To The Plate."

?Now, the word courage is defined in the dictionary as "the ability to do something that frightens you." It is strength in the face of pain, or grief, or danger. You might remember when I told you this story about Nikita Khrushchev, who was the Premier of the Soviet Union. He followed Joseph Stalin. And he was at a rally, and he was decrying the evil atrocities of Joseph Stalin. And someone in the crowd, a heckler in the crowd, shouted, "You were one of his colleagues, Khrushchev. Why didn't you stop him?" And Khrushchev barked out, "Who said that?" And it just became deathly quiet. And after a long pregnant pause, Khrushchev said, "Now you know why." Cowardice instead of courage.

?Ralph Waldo Emerson, the great poet, said this: "Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there's always someone to tell you that you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising that tempt you to believe your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to an end requires some of the same courage that a soldier needs. Peace has its victories, but it takes brave men and women to win them."

?Well, we're starting a new series today called, "Strong and Courageous." It's our theme for the year at First Baptist, Texarkana - strong and courageous. It's the command that God gave to Joshua, "Be strong and courageous," in Joshua chapter 1. And God says it to him three times. In Deuteronomy, Moses, when he was commissioning Joshua to take over after him, told him twice, "Be strong and courageous." In Joshua chapter 1, God tells Joshua three times, "Be strong and courageous." And at the end of Joshua chapter 1, the people tell Joshua, "Be strong and courageous." So very important for Jo ...
