At a self-help seminar in Rohrbach, Austria, participants were urged to walk over hot, fiery coals. The purpose of the exercise was to "mobilize their energy reserves." The course motto was, "If you can walk over hot coals, you can do anything."

The participants faced a 32-foot-long bed of hot embers. Seven fire walkers discovered something terrible that should not have been terribly surprising. Fiery coals can burn bare skin. Their walks ended with a trip to the hospital, where they were treated for severe burns to their feet.

Some people just seem destined to learn the hard way. For some reason...

- They believe they are the exception to the rule.

- They think they can play with fire and not get burned.

- They think they can toy with sin and escape the consequences.

Unfortunately, many of us happen to be "some people." We learn the hard way!

But just as we should not be surprised when foolish actions bring painful results, we should not be surprised when sinful lifestyles bring the pain of God's judgment.

This is what happened with Israel. They walked the path of rebellion and would one day know the searing pain of God's judgment.

Hosea 10 gives us a sobering look at how sin leads to destruction and how God, in His righteousness, will not let rebellion go unchecked. But even in judgment, there is a call to repentance.

Hosea 10.1-15 - Israel is a luxuriant vine; He produces fruit for himself. The more his fruit, Themore altars he made; The richer his land, The better he made the sacred pillars. 2 Their heart is faithless; Now they must bear their guilt. The Lord will break down their altars And destroy their sacred pillars.
