Title: Think Big & Dig Deep
Author: Jeff Ecklund
Text: 1 Chronicles 4:9-10
One of the most inspiring stories of the Bible for me is told in two verses.
The story pops up in a bunch of scriptures that were just laying out the names of the family of Judah. Talking about the sons of Judah and going down the lineage.
The part you usually skip in your daily bible devotional right because you know it's just a list of names, the tribal tree that will go on for chapters...
It hits chapter four of 1st Chronicles and something shifts...Something is added...It's not just a name but it's a description of someone that caught the attention of God and thousands of years later...it still catches our attention!
1 Chronicles 4:9-10 (ESV)
9Jabez was more honorable than his brothers; and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain." 10Jabez called upon the God of Israel, saying, "Oh that you would bless me and enlarge my border, and that your hand might be with me, and that you would keep me from harm so that it might not bring me pain!" And God granted what he asked.
Thousands of years ago a man born out of pain...and just another name in a long list of names...stood out as he made a bold request of God.
And God answered him.
Jabez was asking God not necessarily for "stuff", but for expansion
and influence. And it said that God granted what he asked...
I believe that God answers bold prayers.
That prayer was a big prayer!
I don't think we dream as big as we should, think as big as we should.
I think sometimes the collateral damage of life, of the world just beats the dream out of us. We get jaded...faded..
To some the dream of family is broken by divorce, abuse. Or addiction has robbed intimacy and future... Sometimes we are just lulled into complacency and apathy. Our "give a darn" is broken
Instead of thriving we find ourselves just surviving.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (NKJV)
