Introduction

1. All over this country there are people who have moved from other parts of the world to work here. They're not citizens. They keep their citizenship with their home country. They are required to carry what is called, a "green card." It is known as a permanent resident card and it grants them the right to live and work lawfully anywhere in the United States. They live here and work here, but they aren't citizens here.

2. Whether you realize it or not, if you are a follower of Jesus, you carry a spiritual green card. You live here and work here, but you're truly not a citizen here. Your citizenship is in heaven. Because of that, we should live differently and think differently than the way worldly people do. In fact, the Apostle Paul put it this way, speaking of the difference between earthly citizens and heavenly citizens.

"...Their mind is on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven..." (Philippians 3:19-20, NIV)

3. We are in a series on the greatest sermon ever preached, The Sermon on the Mount, that we're that we're calling "Get Used to Different." Jesus is describing to people who either are citizens of the Kingdom of God or want to be, just how different kingdom citizenship is. He doesn't mince words or pull punches. He states unequivocally that if we're going to follow Jesus, the way we live and conduct our business, and act, and relate to others must be over and above the way the world does it and what would be considered normal. I don't think anywhere else in this magnificent message Jesus gives is that more evident than in what he's about to tell us today. I want to warn you that what you are about to hear maybe some of the most unusual, difficult to swallow and controversial words Jesus ever spoke.
