Introduction

1. If you are a politician or you know anything about politics then you will be familiar with the term "the third rail." If you are not, there are some things in politics that are so controversial that politicians consider it "charged" or "untouchable," because they know it is a lose-lose situation and you are going to be viciously attacked by somebody no matter what you say or how you say it.

2. Let me give you a few easy examples. Talking about reforming Social Security or Medicare is a third rail issue and nobody wants to touch it. Of course right now, no matter which side of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict you are on you are going to upset somebody. Another one is immigration which is hard to find a middle-ground, because those who are for it are accused of not caring about national security and those who are against it are accused of not caring about immigrants or where they come from.

3. A third rail also known as a "live rail," an "electric rail," or a "conductor rail" is a method of providing electric power to a railway locomotive or train via underground railroads and subways.There is a third rail railway in Toronto, Canada. [Jody - Show picture on screen].

A third rail can result in electrocution. That is why they use the metaphor in politics and talk about the risk of committing political suicide by talking about the issue at all.

4. We are in a series on the Sermon on the Mount, the most famous sermon of all time and the greatest sermon ever preached by the greatest preacher who ever lived entitled "Get Used to Different." Now we come to what a lot of preachers would call a "third rail" topic. Frankly, it is one of those topics that I wish I could skip.
