The Importance of Finishing Well

It's easier to start well than to finish well. Good starts are more common than good finishes-whether it be a renovation project, organizing the home, an exercise program, etc..

The Bible emphasizes the importance of finishing the Christian life well.

- "Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it? Otherwise, when he has laid a foundation and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish'" (Luke 14:27-30).

- "But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus" (Acts 20:24).

- "Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted" (Heb. 12:1-3).

- "And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up" (Gal. 6:9).

- "Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward" (2 John 1:8).

How can we make sure we finish well?

Paul's life is coming to an end. He was in a Roman prison and expected to be executed soon. He tells Timothy, "Do you best to come to me soon" (v. 9).
