Title: The Need for Endurance (1)
Series: Endure
Author: Jonathan McLeod
Text: 2 Timothy
An Introduction to 2 Timothy
Author - Paul (1:1) - Paul is in prison in Rome, awaiting execution.
Recipient - Timothy (1:2) - Timothy is Paul's "beloved child" (1:2; cf. 2:1), which indicates that he's younger than Paul. Timothy seems to be someone who might struggle with feelings of fear and shame (1:6-8).
Genre - Letter - Second Timothy is the last NT letter that Paul wrote.
Date - Probably A.D. 64 or 65 - According to Eusebius, Paul was martyred sometime during Nero's reign (which ended in A.D. 68).
Theme - Endurance - Paul encourages Timothy to endure when ministry gets difficult.
Suffering in 2 Timothy
Paul talks a lot about suffering in 2 Timothy. [Read 1:8-12; 2:3, 8-10; 3:1, 10-14a; 4:1-5.] Based on what Paul says about suffering in this letter, we can make two observations about suffering in the life of a Christian.
1. Suffering doesn't necessarily mean that I've failed God. Paul says in 1:11-12 that he suffers because he's been "appointed a preach and apostle and teacher" (v. 11). Has he failed God? No. Is he suffering? Yes.
2. Suffering never means that God has failed me. Paul isn't complaining about his suffering. Paul keeps on faithfully doing what God has called him to do, knowing that Christ suffered for him (an unworthy sinner) and that his suffering is not in vain. [Read 4:6-8.]
We shouldn't be surprised by suffering. Paul says it's normal for a Christian to suffer.
