Scripture: 1 Corinthians 10:16

Title: Sharing Christ's Suffering
Author: Stephen Whitney
Text: 1 Corinthians 10:16

Few men in this century have understood better the inevitability of suffering than Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He never wavered in his Christian opposition to the Nazi regime, although it would mean imprisonment, the threat of torture, danger to his family and finally death. He was executed by the order of Heinrich Himmler in April 1945, only days before Germany was liberated.

It was the fulfillment of what he had always believed and taught:

"Suffering, then, is the badge of true discipleship. The disciple is not above his master. Following Christ means suffering because we have to suffer. That is why Luther reckoned suffering among the marks of the truth Church . . . who are persecuted and martyred for the gospel's sake . . . Discipleship means allegiance to the suffering of Christ, and it is therefore not at all surprising that Christians should be called upon to suffer."

I Peter 2:20-21 If when you do good and suffer for it you endure,
this is a gracious thing in the sight of God. For to this you have
been called, because Christ also suffered for you.

PREDICTION OF SUFFERING Luke 18:31-33

They did not understand what he was saying because they believed that when the Messiah came, he would set up his kingdom forever.

ANTICIPATION OF SUFFERING Luke 22:14-15

Jesus knew that he was going to be arrested that night and that the religious authorities would convict him and put him to death.
