CIT - Jude calls the believers to earnestly contend for the faith.

Proposition - Jude calls believers today to fight for the faith in a day of doctrinal compromise.

INTRODUCTION:

Here are some famous words - "You don't understand, I coulda had class, I coulda been a contender, I coulda been somebody instead of the bum I am." The Waterfront, 1954 Terry Mallory in the film "On the Waterfront" - Because he realizes his sleazy manager had sold him out and not given him the opportunities, he needed to be a champion.

I wonder how many of us feel that way about our past. "I coulda been, I coulda been a contenda."

Jude calls believers to be contenders - to fight, to fight for the faith, and to fight because of the danger that threatens the Church. I want to challenge you to be a contender for God! Be a prize fighter for the faith.

I) JOIN THE FIGHT - VS. 3a

"Beloved" - spoken of those who are love by God. As God's loved children we have a responsibility to take up the fight, out of love and devotion to Him.

Jude states that he intended to write something else at first. He wanted to write about the common salvation that enjoyed. Perhaps the blessings of salvation, the nature of salvation, or the hope of our salvation.

But, he found it necessary - literally he felt a compulsion by the Holy Spirit to issue a call to battle for the truth. He is calling up God's army to join in the fight for the Gospel. To contend for the truth. The image is of a boxer or a wrestler stepping into the ring for a match.

1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness and fear;

How we fight is as important as what we fight for!
