INTRODUCTION: On the first day of Christmas my true love gave to me, a what? A partridge in a pear tree. On the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. On the third day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me: Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, FIVE GOLDEN RINGS! Four calling birds, three French hens, two turtle doves, and a partridge in a pear tree. I'm going to stop there; do you know why? Because THIS day, December 29th, IS the FIFTH day of Christmas. In this song, the first day of Christmas BEGINS on December 25th and runs through January 6th. Do you know what those twelve days are based upon? What they represent? The amount of time between the day of Jesus' birth and the arrival of the wise men, the Magi.
The Magi WERE late to the party. The Bible says, "On coming to the HOUSE, they saw the child with his mother Mary" (Matthew 2:11). So, the family has moved out of the manger/animal stable and into a house. It may have been just a few days after the birth, we don't really know. But they WERE late. They were PARTY TARDIES. But no one minded the Magi being late to the party, do you know why? Because they brought GIFTS! And OH, WHAT GIFTS. We celebrate Christmas by bringing Jesus gifts. I know we just gave ONE ANOTHER gifts this past December 25th. But what about the BIRTHDAY BOY? Talk about trying to find something for the person who has everything!
