INTRODUCTION
Take your Bibles and find your place in John chapter 20. Let's begin by reading verse number 21 and then look down through verse 23.?
Listen to what Jesus says as we focus our hearts and minds on the Great Commission together this morning:?
(IMAG) John 20:21, "So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
Here in John 20:21, we have the last of the commissions in the four gospels.
Near the end of each gospel, Jesus gives a "commission," an order, and a directive, if you will, and each one of these different commissions has a different emphasis.?
For example, in -
- (IMAG) Matthew 28:18 emphasizes our authority: "All authority has been given to Me in Heaven and on earth. 19?Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations..." That's why we never have to ask or wonder, "Is it my job to share the gospel?"? No, we have His authority.
- In Mark, the emphasis is on activity.? (IMAG) Mark 16:20, "And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them..."?
They went everywhere preaching the gospel because the Lord was working with them.
- Luke's emphasis is on ability. (IMAG) Luke 24:49 says, "Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high." That's why we must never try to share the gospel in our own strength or power. No, we must always and only rely on and depend upon the power of the Holy Spirit of God.?
But here in John chapter 20:21, the emphasis isn't on our -
- Authority, even though it's there.
- Activity, even though it's there.
- Ability, although He mentions it in verse 22.
So, when we read John chapter 20, verse 21, and hear the Lord Jesus Christ say, "As the Father has sent me, I also send you," we begin to realize just how ...
