Text: Matthew 6: 9-13
INTRODUCTION
Take your Bibles this morning and turn with me to Matthew chapter 6. I'm so glad that you're here on this long holiday weekend. It's much better to preach to people than to preach to empty pews/chairs.
Illustration: Four law school students were used to cheating and conniving to get better grades. Their final exam was due the following day, and they wanted some extra time to study and improve their grades.?
The plan was simple: don't show up for the exam, spend the whole day studying and preparing, show up the next day, and get a good grade.
They didn't show up for the test, and they managed to learn everything to the point of perfection. The next morning, they were confident because they knew they would pass the test with flying colors.?
They met the professor who said, "Boys, I suppose you already know I expect a valid reason for your absence!"
"Of course, professor, we just had a bit of an accident!"
"An accident? Was anybody hurt?"
"Nobody, thank God. You see, we share a single car. Yesterday, we had the funeral of our close friend scheduled at noon. We had to drive back home to attend it, and all was going great, but on our way home, a rock blew our tire, and we had to pull over. It was already two hours past midnight, and we were in quite a hurry. We had to take off the wheel, call a taxi, wait for the taxi, and go to a 24/7 car repair service, which was hard to find, only to realize that the tire was beyond repair. We didn't have spare and had to get a motel room because we were a long way from home. The next morning, we bought two replacement tires and drove back home. The tire shop opened at noon, and our test was scheduled for 10 AM, so we had no chance of arriving on time. But thankfully we finally got back home!"
"Well, that is certainly a happy ending!? Now, did you study anything?"
