Title: The Harbinger-Prophet's Birth
Author: Christopher B. Harbin
Text: Luke 1:39-55
Qaletaqa's story begins prior to birth. It begins with an announcement to his father, his mother, and eventually to the family of a cousin. When Nicky had first left Saturn, it was to find her cousin, Deyani. She and Braden had gone to the foothills seeking Deyani and Gawonisgi, looking for some support from relatives away from home. In many ways, it was a reminder of how unwed teenage girls used to be sent off somewhere to live with an aunt if they got pregnant. They did not find a place to live with Deyani and Gawonisgi, but their visit was very much remarkable.
Deyani had been hoping for a baby for years, but pregnancy was not coming according to her time frame and wishes. Gawonisgi had taken her to fertility clinics, but there was seemingly nothing to be done to help them conceive. Then life took an unexpected turn. While Gawonisgi was serving in ritual worship, he had a vision in which he was told their desire for parenthood had been heard and Deyani would conceive, after all. The coming child would be a prophet, and they were to name her Qaletaqa, "Guardian of the people." God's grace would flow through the child to change minds throughout the nation and turn people toward God's standards of justice.
Gawonisgi had balked at such a declaration, flustered with an unexpected visitor, vision, and message. With his and Deyani's advanced years and history, a baby seemed completely out of question, much less one on whom God's very Breath would rest from birth. For his failure to trust the word given to him and as a sign of the truth in this promised intervention, Gawonisgi learned he would not be able to speak again until this promise had been fulfilled. Leaving the worship rituals, Gawonisgi could not utter a word. Those present understood through his gestures that something strange had happened and he had received some kind of vision. Silently, Gawonisgi returned home ...
