Title: Good Christian Men, Rejoice!
Author: Mike Stone
Text: Luke 2:10-11
In the 14th Century, a Latin Christmas poem was set to music. It reminds us that Christian men, women, and children are to rejoice in the GOOD NEWS of Christmas.
Good Christian men, rejoice. With heart and soul and voice!
Give ye heed to what we say, Jesus Christ is born today!
Man and beast before Him bow and He is in the manger now.
Christ is born today. Christ is born today.
But our good news doesn't come from a 14th century poet but from an angel out on the Judean hillside. He announces the birth of Christ and shares the gospel with a group of undeserving men, undeserving folks like you and like me.
Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord!"
We find reason to rejoice in so many things. Carols and candies...presents and parties...family and friends... But in the 46 words of this text, we find the greatest reason for men, women, and children to rejoice!
1. Rejoice because of the grace in that meeting
If you were to ask anyone on the street, "What is your favorite Christmas carol?" we'd get answers like
Joy to the World
Away in a Manger
O, Come, All Ye Faithful
But here's a great "Christmas song" you might not have thought of as such:
Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me
There were several things involved in the meeting that night.
A virgin, a husband, a baby
An archangel leading a multitude of heavenly hosts
Shepherds watching their sheep
Stars filling the night sky
But above all else, this meeting involved the grace of God.
A. The message that God had come for us (then)
This is not the birth announcement. given to Satan in Genesis 3
Or given to Abraham in Genesis 22
Or given to Isaiah in Isaiah 7
Or given to Micah in Mic ...
