Title: The Savior Behind the Silhouette
Author: Robert Dawson
Text: Matthew 1:18-25
A while back, my son, John Mark, showed me a baseball quiz on his phone. It wasn't based on baseball history or stats but batting stances. It would show you a silhouette of a player's batting stance/swing and you had to guess the player.
Now, I haven't been able to watch MLB games the last several years, even though I try to follow the sport though articles and highlights, so I am not as familiar with some of the newer players but when it came to the batting stances of players from the 90s and first part of the 2000s, I knew who many of them were. Some were just iconic, like Ken Griffey Jr, who is now in his 50s but can still hit bombs!
When it comes to Christmas, what remains for many people, is a silhouette of what Christmas is really about.
- They see the shadowy figure behind Christmas, but they don't really know who He is.
- They may be able to guess the name of the babe in the manger and yet they still miss the message of Christmas.
Many people approach Christmas like this one little kindergartner in Sunday School. It was the Sunday before Thanksgiving. The teacher quizzed them on the meaning of the holiday. She started out by playfully saying, "Let me see...Thanksgiving is the day when we think about all the stuff we have, and how we want more and only think about ourselves...."
All the children started yelling "No. No. That's not it." Before the class could finish and correct the teacher, one little fellow blurted out, "That's not Thanksgiving! That's Christmas!"
Today, I want us to dig in and discover a little more about the meaning of Christmas and the identity behind the silhouette in the manger.
To help us, we will look at a portion of Jesus' birth narrative from the Gospel of Matthew to help us learn more about who Jesus is and why He came.
