CIT - Joesph's rise to power in Egypt

INTRODUCTION:

Theologians define the Providence of God as his sovereign control that he exercises over creation. This means that God is governing the world and that includes your life and mine.

God's providence means that God is actively at work bring about His will and purposes. Even when we don't understand what He is up to, we know that he working all things out for the good of those who trust Him.

Joe is a great example of this.

Joe's example is a tremendous source of encouragement. Even when we fell forgotten and imprisoned, God is at work. His providence, His sovereign control, is working to bring good out of even the darkest pits.

I) WE CAN TRUST GOD EVEN WHEN WE CAN'T SEE HIM AT WORK - VS. 1-1

VS. 1 . . . at the end of two full years - a long time to be forgotten.

"Those two full years for Joseph were neither exciting nor eventful. They represented a long, dull, monotonous, unspectacular, slow-moving grind. Month after month after month of . . . well nothing. Not even the Genesis account attempts to make those years seem meaningful." Swindoll, Joesph, p. 58

Here was forgotten by his brothers, forgotten by the evil woman who had lied away his character and career, forgotten by Potiphar who had owned him so much, forgotten by the butler, forgotten by all except his father who thought of him, no doubt, to be long dead. Forgotten by all, but God!

We learn one of the great lessons of Scripture here - God is at work even when we cannot see, or understand what He is doing.

ILLUS: William Cowper, a literary genius understood this. He was a frail man, sickly, with a pinched face and constantly swollen eyes. He attempted suicide. He spent time in an insane asylum. Yet out of all those sufferings he wrote these words.
