Reaching the end of a job interview, the human resources person asked a young engineer fresh out of MIT what kind of a salary he was looking for. "In the neighborhood of $240,000 a year, depending on the benefits package." "Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks' vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical & dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, & a company car leased every 2 years...say, a red Corvette?" "Wow! Are you kidding?" "Yeah, but you started it." A servant's heart is sorely lacking in our society today. God's people should have a servant's heart.

Being a deacon has nothing to do with empowerment, it has all to do with serving, being a servant leader, which sounds like any oxymoron, but Jesus always told his followers that the way to the top was by serving and stooping. Jesus was the epitome of a servant leader, as he served people day in and day out, even washing the feet of his disciples, as they sat there in stunned silence.

I was ordained as a deacon in the early 1980's and then I had the opportunity to serve as a deacon with some of the best men I have ever known. In 1985, my wife and I joined Holly Creek Baptist church, and before long they invited me to serve along with their other deacons. I was only around 26 years old, so I was the youngest of the group, and thankfully I had enough sense to watch and learn.

I was able to watch those godly men, as they served the church and worked alongside the pastor, as the church grew mightily. I still revere those godly men, most of them are no longer around, men such as Gordon Long Sr, Gordon Long Jr, Boyd "Hoot" Hogan, Gene Smith, Mike Long, and other ...
