Text: Galatians 2:16-21
Hold up light bulb - "What is this?" It's a light bulb. That's its identity. That's what it is. And what does a light bulb do? It shines light - it illuminates. It's made for one purpose - to be plugged into an electrical outlet to glow w/ light. And we know this b/c we have either seen it or b/c we've been taught it.
But if we had the ability to take this bulb back in a time, say 2000 yrs. - and hand it to the emperor of Rome and leave, he wouldn't have a clue w/ what to do w/ it, b/c the Romans had no knowledge of electricity - it hadn't been discovered yet. So, the bulbs identity would be lost on the emperor.
Just like this light bulb, we all were created w/ an identity and for a purpose. But unless we know our true identity, we'll be just like Caesar w/ a light bulb - possessing it but not understanding it.
Question - how do we discover who we are and what we were designed to do? We go to our Designer and ask Him. Just like the inventor of the light bulb gets to determine the purpose of the light bulb, God has determined who we are and how we function.
This AM - as we close out our His Story series - I want to look at one of the most important teachings in the N.T. - and that is - our identity in Christ.
Question - who is Joey Rodgers? Many of you would say - he is the pastor of FBCPTC. Some would say - Meg's husband - or Abi, Madeline, Colin, and Camden's dad. But do these descriptions actually answer the question? NO! B/c being a pastor or husband/father isn't WHO I am - it's what I get to do.
Who we are isn't defined by our vocation or family - or even our successes, fears, or failures. Our identity is determined by the God who knit us together in our mother's womb. Even more, our identity is determined by His grace when we receive Jesus as Lord/Savior and we're transformed from a sinner to saint, from lost to found, from death to lif ...
