In high school, while I was a decent student, I was better known for being an athlete. I played football, baseball, wrestled, and ran cross country - lettering 12 times across (4) sports - b/c (surprise) I love to compete (I'm just a little competitive). But you know what I didn't love - practice! I hated practice b/c it was always grueling. Especially, wrestling practice. Our practices consisted of way too much conditioning and move repetition. Take down after take down. ½ nelson after ½ nelson - yet the more I practiced, the more naturally these moves became 2nd nature to me.

I'm reminded of the idiom - Practice makes perfect? It means the more you do something over/over, the more you repeat/rehearse it, usually the better you become at it. Whether it's acting, arithmetic, art, or athletics or something else - repetition/persistence most often leads to greater proficiency.

This is where we pick up the story of Elijah. W/out question, Elijah is my favorite O.T. character b/c he was a nobody from nowhere that God made a somebody somewhere for His glory.

To begin let me offer some context. After Solomon's death, Israel experienced a civil war of sorts dividing the nation into (2) regions - Israel in the north and Judah in the south. Israel had (19) consecutive wicked kings, each leading Israel further/further away from God. For some 200 yrs, Israel so turned from Jehovah to other gods that God's name was all but forgotten. Ultimately, b/c of the gross wickedness of the kings and the waywardness of the people, Israel was taken over by the Assyrians in 722 B.C., and then 136 yrs later, Judah was overtaken by the Babylonians.
