Title: The Wise Guy (5)
Series: His Story
Author: Joey Rodgers
Text: 1 Kings 3:1-28
I'm sure you've heard the joke about when Billy Graham, M.J., the smartest man in the world, and a little boy were on a plane that was about to crash. Problem was, there were only (3) chutes and (4) people. Explaining that he was the world's greatest athlete, MJ took a chute and jumped. Next, explaining he was the smartest man alive, the 2nd guy took a chute and jumped. BG, then told the boy, "Son, I've lived a full life and served God well. You take the last chute." The boy said, "That's okay, Mr. Graham. The smartest man in the world just took my backpack."
This joke reminds me of a bumper sticker I recently saw - I took an IQ test and the results were negative.
There's a name for this condition - sophomore. Not to pick on our 10th graders, but the etymology comes from sophos meaning clever/wise, and moros meaning foolish/moronic. So, a sophomore is a clever moron b/c they have just enough knowledge to be dangerous, yet not enough to know how much they don't know.
As we continue our His Story series, we come to the story of Solomon - who the Bible reveals was a wise foolb/c while he was the wisest man on earth, he did not always make the right decisions. He was too smart for his own good. How else to explain choosing to have 700 wives and 300 concubines?
In all seriousness, Solomon had wisdom from above, but he didn't always apply it - and sadly, the same can be true of us. Whether we have smarts, gifts, talents, wealth, etc. - if we don't submit them to the Lord, we're more likely to squander them than use them.
This was true of Solomon. His life is a great reminder that it isn't always how you start but how you finish that truly matters.
Principle #1 - a good finish is always better than a glorious start.
This is especially true when it comes to faith. The moment we think we've arrived spiritually, that's when we've blown it - b/c when it comes ...
